[00:00:00]Give me your arm. [00:00:02]She's crazy. [00:00:05]I see the prancing horse abandoning its lady. [00:00:07]Not abandoning. [00:00:09]He dances the bay, he knows how to dance. [00:00:13]Why is he dressed up and still free? [00:00:16]You'll expire if tonight is a night of celebration. [00:00:22]I'm not sure yet if I should hug you or sit down for a moment. [00:00:25]And all these cares are for my sake? [00:00:27]To take off your coat? [00:00:31]Go to your room. [00:00:34]Or, if you prefer, I can stay here and turn my back. [00:00:41]Then excuse me. [00:00:57]Very kind of you, Mr. Jean. [00:01:01]Very kind. [00:01:04]I'm going to talk to you about a topic, lady. [00:01:06]Shall I speak French? [00:01:09]Where did you learn it? [00:01:11]In Switzerland. [00:01:13]When I worked at the Copa of one of the best hotels. [00:01:17]He really seems like a gentleman. [00:01:19]Charm. [00:01:21]What is that? [00:01:23]It's a kind of football. [00:01:25]Good. [00:01:27]Charm. [00:01:29]He's just being charming. [00:01:31]I'll charm him. [00:01:33]My modesty [00:01:35]only allows me to understand your length with the excesses of nervousness. [00:01:39]To be able to give me all these answers [00:01:41]it's because you have already traveled a lot in this world, haven't you? [00:01:43]Yes. [00:01:45]And must have been to the theaters. [00:01:47]That's true. [00:01:49]And I traveled a lot too. [00:01:51]But you're from here, aren't you? [00:01:53]And when Julia was little [00:01:55]I used to see many bridges. [00:01:59]Although [00:02:01]it never clicked for me. [00:02:03]You saw it yourself? [00:02:05]Yes. [00:02:07]I remember a particular time, but [00:02:09]I can't tell you about it now. [00:02:11]Come on, tell me. It's the perfect moment. [00:02:13]No. [00:02:15]Now it's not even possible. [00:02:17]Maybe another time. [00:02:19]Another time means never. [00:02:21]Right now? [00:02:23]There's no harm, but it's better not to. [00:02:25]Why don't you sit down? [00:02:27]In your presence I cannot take that liberty. [00:02:29]What if I tell you to sit down? [00:02:31]I obey. Then sit down. [00:02:33]No, wait a minute. [00:02:35]First go get a drink. [00:02:37]Only beer, I think. [00:02:39]It's alright, I prefer beer to wine. [00:02:41]At your service. [00:02:45]Thank you. [00:02:47]Won't you drink with me? [00:02:49]I'm not a big beer drinker, [00:02:51]but if there's an order... [00:02:53]I believe it's part of the rules [00:02:55]to keep company with another person, don't you think? [00:02:57]It's a good way to look at things. [00:02:59]And drink to my health. [00:03:03]I know I'm a timid knight. [00:03:05]To the health of my lady. [00:03:07]Bravo. [00:03:11]And now, for the scene to be perfect, [00:03:15]kiss my shoe. [00:03:19]OBS single [00:03:21]smoking [00:03:29]Slow! You were definitely an actor once. [00:03:31]It's best to stop, Jeffrey. [00:03:33]You could turn into a... [00:03:35]And with Macro together? [00:03:37]What don't you see them saying afterward? [00:03:39]If I had been able to speak that language, sticking it [00:03:41]right in there... [00:03:43]To what? Tell me... [00:03:45]Sit down! [00:03:47]I wanted to offend, but... [00:03:50]Well, thanks for poorly trying to explain yourself. [00:03:54]Imagine that? She's not a child anymore. [00:03:57]Now, if they saw a lady drinking, accompanied by a man, [00:04:00]at night, with a servant no less, then. [00:04:03]So what? I'm in love with the servant. [00:04:08]They don't have to convince me, but these things can happen. [00:04:11]And it is known that for these rustic people there is nothing sacred. [00:04:14]He's a snob, he's an aristocrat. [00:04:17]Yes, I am. [00:04:18]And today, everyone in this world... [00:04:21]Don't let me down. [00:04:23]Follow my advice, no one will ever believe that from this book, they will be all. [00:04:27]They will say that they come to fall. [00:04:29]I have a better opinion of people than you do, you know? [00:04:35]Go on, go ahead. [00:04:39]Let's try it. [00:04:44]She's a strange person, you know? [00:04:47]Maybe she is, but you are too. [00:04:50]And looking closely, everything is so strange. [00:05:40]Já me vejo sentir isto. [00:05:43]Não. [00:05:46]No meu sonho, estou deitado abaixo de uma grande árvore, [00:05:49]In a dark forest. [00:05:52]I want to climb to the top. [00:05:55]To see the landscape shining, illuminated by the sun and steal the golden eggs [00:05:58]from the nest up there. [00:06:01]I start to climb, climbing. [00:06:04]But the trunk is wide and smooth and the first branch is still very far away. [00:06:07]What if I ask her, equal to equal, [00:06:10]like your friend? [00:06:13]What will she do? [00:06:19]You. [00:06:22]Wait. [00:06:25]It's ridiculous to say and this story that Alcatel didn't want to tell you. [00:06:28]But I'm going to tell you now. [00:06:31]Do you know what this world looks like when you see it from down here? [00:06:34]No. [00:06:37]You can't have any idea. Just like the hawk and the falcon that live [00:06:40]up there, perched with their backs to us, we never get to see. [00:06:43]I grew up in a farm worker's cabin, [00:06:46]with seven other kids and a people [00:06:49]surrounded by dark earth, without sea. [00:06:55]And from my window I saw [00:06:58]a wall that enclosed Mr. Conte's park. [00:07:01]We climbed higher than the apple trees. [00:07:04]It was Edda's garden, in truth for terrible years with swords of fire. [00:07:09]And even so, [00:07:12]me and the other boys managed to touch the tree of life. [00:07:18]Is that what makes her despise it? [00:07:21]For God's sake, all the boys steal apples. [00:07:26]Say that now, but whatever she despises it. [00:07:31]Even so, one day [00:07:34]I entered paradise with my mother [00:07:37]to pick the herbs from the onion bed. [00:07:44]At the foot of the vegetable garden was the Turkish pavilion, all covered in jasmine and myrtle. [00:07:47]I didn't know what it was for, but I had never seen such a beautiful house. [00:07:52]People entered and came out again. [00:07:56]And one day the door stayed open. [00:08:02]But I don't even remember going inside. [00:08:05]And I don't know where I was. [00:08:08]I don't know where I was. [00:08:11]I don't know where I was. [00:08:14]But I don't even remember going inside. [00:08:17]And I saw depictions of kings and emperors [00:08:20]and windows with red curtains like fringes. [00:08:28]Now you already get the idea, if you didn't know. [00:08:35]I only ever stayed at the palace, [00:08:38]only went to church, [00:08:41]but that was even more beautiful. [00:08:46]How could a thought of taking me [00:08:48]would be that place that I always returned to? [00:08:51]Where I know I might have been only once. [00:08:54]It grew in me. [00:09:00]Finally, I dared to enter. [00:09:03]Dumbfounded, amazed. [00:09:07]I heard a noise and someone approaching. [00:09:10]There was the door of the lords and for me the only exit. [00:09:16]I lifted the force cover. [00:09:19]I slid down the rampart, ran through [00:09:21]the raspberry bush, crossed the strawberry field [00:09:24]and hid myself on the rose garden terrace. [00:09:27]I saw a pink dress and a pair of white socks. [00:09:37]It was you. [00:09:43]I hid myself in the pile of debris, [00:09:46]under the crates that pricked me [00:09:49]and the wet earth smelled bad. [00:09:55]And while I looked at you, [00:09:59]among the roses, for a moment. [00:10:02]If it's true that a thief [00:10:05]can enter the kingdom of heaven and be among angels. [00:10:13]Why in this land of God [00:10:16]is there no reason why a peasant's son [00:10:24]can play with the daughter of the court? [00:10:29]Do you think all poor boys feel what you felt? [00:10:33]All poor boys? [00:10:36]Of course they feel, for sure. [00:10:39]It must be terrible to be poor. [00:10:42]Oh yes, Julien, yes. [00:10:45]I went fishing and got hit by a punch. [00:10:48]But the following Sunday, when my father and the rest of the family went to visit Grandma, [00:10:53]I did everything not to go with them. [00:10:56]I washed myself with hot water and soap. [00:10:59]I put on my best clothes. [00:11:02]I had no more hope of there being. [00:11:07]I saw and went home determined to die. [00:11:12]But I wanted to die in peace and beauty, without suffering. [00:11:15]Then I remembered that it was dangerous, we slept under an old willow tree. [00:11:19]We had a huge one, all in bloom. [00:11:25]I collected all the flowers, I traded them for inside the oat crate with the flowers. [00:11:28]Have you ever noticed how calming oats are? [00:11:34]It's soft, like someone's skin. [00:11:38]I closed the lid, I closed my eyes. [00:11:41]I fell asleep. [00:11:44]But I didn't die as you see. [00:11:48]What I wanted with all that, I don't know, I had no hope of ever winning. [00:11:51]It was simply a symbol of the hopelessness of ever getting out of the class where I was born. [00:11:54]You told me all this very well, you know? [00:11:57]Did you go to school? [00:12:01]A little while, but I went a lot to the theater and read novels. [00:12:04]And I always listened attentively to educated people talking. [00:12:07]And that's where I learned the most. [00:12:10]With people? By listening to what they said? [00:12:13]For sure. [00:12:16]And I have heard a lot, driving the car or rowing in the neighborhood. [00:12:19]Once I heard Sí, Julia, and one of her friends. [00:12:22]Ah, yes? And what did you hear? [00:12:25]It wouldn't be right to repeat it. [00:12:28]But I have to say that I thought about where I would have learned those words. [00:12:31]Perhaps more in intimacy. [00:12:34]There aren't those differences between people that make us believe there are. [00:12:37]What audacity! [00:13:10]Vamos embora daqui imediatamente. No primeiro convóio. [00:13:13]It’s alright, but now you have to give me courage. [00:13:16]Say that you love me. Embrace me. [00:13:19]I would like to do that, but I can't. [00:13:29]I don't doubt it. [00:13:32]Why do you still doubt that I love you, Julia? [00:13:35]They call me "you." [00:13:38]I can't. [00:13:41]While I’m in this house, there will always be barriers between us. [00:13:44]The past, Mr. Count. [00:13:47]I've never met anyone for whom I had so much respect. [00:13:50]Just seeing his gloves resting on a fireplace mantel [00:13:53]makes me feel small. [00:13:56]I heard the march playing and was startled like a horse. [00:14:02]They are old prejudices that were put in our heads when we were children, [00:14:05]then we learned to make them forget. [00:14:10]Living in another country, in a republic. [00:14:15]And the people where they bowed, try to release from my doorman. [00:14:20]Where they bowed twice as much as I have ever bowed, but I never will. [00:14:24]I wasn't born to bow. [00:14:27]I have backbone, I have character. [00:14:30]And reached the first branch where I saw myself climbing. [00:14:35]Today I am raised for the year of being appropriator. [00:14:38]Here for ten years, things made of fortune. [00:14:41]It's something to make me decorated. [00:14:44]And everything stays as before. [00:14:47]Do you think I will continue to be your patroness, [00:14:50]when everyone is pointing their finger at me? [00:14:53]Do you think I am capable of facing my father after everything that happened? [00:14:56]No. [00:14:59]No, take me away from this shame, this humiliation. [00:15:02]What did you do? [00:15:05]We changed the music, didn't we? [00:15:13]The same thing that many girls have done before you. [00:15:16]And now you despise me. [00:15:20]I’m going to fall. [00:15:26]Fall. [00:15:29]I won't get up. [00:15:34]How did I let myself be attracted to you this way? [00:15:42]Fragility for strength. [00:15:46]What falls, for what it takes. [00:15:54]Or is this love? [00:15:59]What is this? [00:16:02]Now you know what love is. [00:16:05]I will know it if you tell me. [00:16:08]You think I've never had a girlfriend. [00:16:11]The things you are capable of saying. [00:16:14]And thinking. [00:16:17]It's not everything that life has taught me about who I am. [00:16:20]Don't get theatrical, don't give yourself airs. [00:16:23]Now we are in the same boat. [00:16:26]Where did you get this wine? [00:16:29]The bottle. [00:16:32]It’s my father’s prized possession. [00:16:35]And why isn’t there always your father's mug around? [00:16:38]And I drink beer. [00:16:41]That only shows that my tastes are more refined than yours. [00:16:44]Thief. [00:16:47]The accomplice of the thief Zeco. [00:16:50]I compliment myself. [00:16:53]It's a night of innocent pleasures. [00:16:56]Innocent, huh? [00:16:59]For someone in this world as unhappy as I feel right now. [00:17:06]And why should you be feeling so unhappy? [00:17:14]Have you ever thought of me? [00:17:17]About how I might feel? [00:17:20]Just a fleeting glance. [00:17:23]A servant is a servant. [00:17:26]And a whore is a whore. [00:17:33]I have to confess, I feel sorry for you. [00:17:36]Back when I used to go to the onion field and saw her later at the Rose Garden, [00:17:42]I have to say, [00:17:45]I had the same despicable feelings as all the other guys. [00:17:48]You who wanted to die for my sake. [00:17:51]A load of rubbish. Those were just stories. [00:17:54]Lies, is what you want to say. [00:17:57]Sort of. [00:18:00]I think I read in the newspaper about a chimney sweep [00:18:03]who locked himself in a coffin full of lilies to avoid paying child support. [00:18:06]And that's what you are? [00:18:09]I have to come up with something. It's stories with fantasy that attract women. [00:18:12]You bastard! [00:18:15]It wasn’t your own tailbone. [00:18:18]And it was you, my first branch. And the branch was rotten. [00:18:21]If it's not going to be the hotel image. And I, the hotel? [00:18:24]Sitting at your bar, attracting customers and falsifying accounts. [00:18:27]And I'll be in charge of everything. [00:18:30]How can you just jump into madness like this? [00:18:45]No, no. [00:18:48]No. [00:18:55]Run away with me then. [00:18:59]Run away? [00:19:02]Yes, we have to run away, but… [00:19:05]But I'm so tired. [00:19:11]Get me a glass of wine. [00:19:15]First, we need to talk, we still need to have... [00:19:18]Don’t look at me like that, you’ll drive yourself crazy. [00:19:20]And then? [00:19:21]Getting drunk is too vulgar afterwards. [00:19:24]Come on, there's something you want to tell me. [00:19:26]We have to run away, but first we need to talk. [00:19:28]Or better, I have to talk. [00:19:31]Because so far it's only been you who has said everything. [00:19:35]You told me everything about your life. [00:19:38]And now I have to tell you some things about mine. [00:19:42]Before we embark on this journey we're going to take together. [00:19:44]Wait there. [00:19:46]Excuse me, but… [00:19:48]Don't you think you'll regret telling me certain secrets? [00:19:51]He’s not my friend. [00:19:53]General, yes, but I don't trust him that much. [00:19:56]You're just saying that. [00:19:59]Everyone else knows my secrets anyway. [00:20:04]The accident happened exactly on the day the insurance expired. [00:20:06]My father had already wired the payment, but he arrived late because of the messenger. [00:20:09]Don’t say anymore. [00:20:10]What's wrong with you? [00:20:15]We lost our house and had to sleep in cars. [00:20:20]My father was completely desperate, because he couldn't find money to rebuild the house. [00:20:26]And it was my mother who suggested asking an old friend of theirs. [00:20:29]A brick manufacturer here nearby. [00:20:33]The man agreed, and to my father's surprise, he didn't want interest. [00:20:38]And everything was rebuilt. [00:20:44]Do you know who set the fire? [00:20:46]Your mother. [00:20:49]Do you know who the brickmaker was? [00:20:51]The man your mother knew? [00:20:57]And do you know whose money it was? [00:20:59]But, hold on, no, that's not right anymore. [00:21:02]It was my mother's. [00:21:04]It doesn't mean there wasn't a contract, any shared property? [00:21:06]There already was a contract. [00:21:07]My mother had her own money so she wouldn't be subject to my father, who put it in the friend's account. [00:21:12]And he collected it. [00:21:13]And Zato kept it. [00:21:21]My father eventually found out. [00:21:25]He couldn't pay his lover, nor prove that the money was... [00:21:27]In the newspapers! And the building wouldn't stand it. [00:21:29]I can't leave, all I have left is to stay. Help me, please. [00:21:32]Give an order and obey like a dog. Tell me what I have to do, where I have to go? [00:21:37]They are already talking about the situation you are in. [00:21:38]They are already talking about the situation you are in. [00:21:39]Because I'm going to make Zé Arguinhos at Vista, as if they were the lords of creation. [00:21:42]Very well, I will give you orders. Go up there and dress up. [00:21:45]Count the money for the trip and come back down. [00:21:47]Come up with me. [00:21:48]Speak to your room, but he's crazy again. No! [00:21:51]Speak to me kindly, João! [00:21:52]You already know about an order and it can't be given kindly. [00:22:38]The sun is already rising. [00:22:42]The enchantments are breaking. [00:22:45]Yes. [00:22:48]It was the same night as all the enchantments. [00:22:51]You have to listen to me, you will listen, I don't even know. [00:22:55]No, no, no. [00:22:57]No, no, no. [00:22:59]No, no, no. [00:23:01]No, no, no. [00:23:03]No, no, no. [00:23:05]No, no, no. [00:23:06]You have to listen to me, you will listen, I don't even know. [00:23:10]I can't stay here anymore. We have to run away and if we were both going abroad. [00:23:15]To Switzerland and open a hotel, I have money and we would take care of everything. [00:23:18]Wasn't it wonderful? [00:23:20]Wasn't it wonderful? Tell him yes. [00:23:22]Tell him yes. Go on, tell him yes. Tell him yes, please, tell him yes. [00:23:27]I have never traveled. I have to leave here and see the world. [00:23:31]And it's so good to give you a ride, it's so good. [00:23:33]We can see new and new lands and we can go to Hamburg. [00:23:37]We can go to Hamburg at the Logical Service. [00:23:40]I will like it very much and then we will go to the opera and theater. [00:23:44]And then we will go to Munich to the museums. [00:23:46]They have paintings by Rubens and Rafael there, who are great painters. [00:23:49]And they heard a lot about Munich, you know? [00:23:51]It's where King Louis lived, that king who died. [00:23:54]And we can visit his castle. They still have castles there. [00:23:57]They still have castles there, I'll go see them, and I'll tell you about the ones from fairytales. [00:24:00]And think more, we are very close to Switzerland and the Alps. [00:24:03]Think well of the Alps covered in snow in full summer. [00:24:06]And oranges and green laurels all year round. [00:24:10]And then we open a hotel. [00:24:12]And I sit at the desk. [00:24:15]That's where you receive clients, make purchases, and write letters. [00:24:19]And it's a great life, a great life. [00:24:22]The trains have arrived, come on, they're coming in cars. [00:24:25]Campaigns playing in the rooms and the restaurant. [00:24:27]And me, sitting at the desk, writing invoices. [00:24:30]Yes, yes, I also know how to make money. [00:24:33]And we're going to get rich. [00:24:35]And we're going to build a good life by the railway. [00:24:38]I know it rains sometimes. [00:24:40]But I believe the sun shines sometimes too. [00:24:43]Which gives everything a very melancholic air, but it doesn't matter. [00:24:46]It doesn't matter if things don't go well. We can go back. [00:24:49]We can go back here. [00:24:51]Or to some other place. [00:24:54]It's a shame. [00:24:55]It's a shame. [00:24:57]I don't believe anymore. [00:24:59]Almost nothing. [00:25:01]I don't believe in anything anymore. [00:25:05]I don't believe in anything anymore. [00:25:12]I don't believe in almost anything anymore. [00:25:14]I only said things that could become reality. [00:25:17]Who would prefer to be somewhere else? [00:25:22]Me. [00:25:25]Me. [00:25:28]Me. [00:25:31]Me. [00:25:33]Me. [00:25:35]Me. [00:25:37]Me. [00:25:39]Me. [00:25:41]Me. [00:25:43]Me. [00:25:45]Me. [00:25:47]Me. [00:25:49]Me. [00:25:51]Me. [00:25:53]Me. [00:25:55]Me. [00:25:57]Me. [00:25:59]Me. [00:26:01]Me. [00:26:04]Me. [00:26:06]Me. [00:26:08]Me. [00:26:10]Me. [00:26:12]Me. [00:26:14]Me. [00:26:45]Yes. [00:26:48]That's right. [00:26:51]But I wouldn't do it. [00:26:55]It should be noted that there is a difference between us. [00:27:00]Why? [00:27:03]Because you are a man and I am a woman? [00:27:08]What's the difference? [00:27:11]The difference that exists between... [00:27:12]A man and a woman. [00:27:27]I would like to, but I can't. [00:27:34]My father couldn't either, when he had the duty to do so. [00:27:37]No. [00:27:38]He didn't have a duty to do it. [00:27:42]He had to take revenge first. [00:27:52]The cone arrived. [00:27:55]I'm so tired. [00:28:00]I can't regret it. [00:28:04]I can't regret it. [00:28:08]I can't leave. [00:28:10]I can't stay. [00:28:14]I don't want to live or die. [00:28:19]Help me. [00:28:23]Give an order and I obey with calmness. [00:28:30]You know what I should want. [00:28:36]But I can't want it. [00:28:38]I can't. [00:28:43]I force myself to do it. [00:28:50]Now I don't know. [00:28:54]I'm capable, I don't understand. [00:28:56]What is that? [00:29:05]This devil of a lackey makes me nail my spine. [00:29:12]I believe if you now descend and tell me to cut the cane... [00:29:18]I would obey right away. [00:29:20]So pretend you are him and I am you. [00:29:25]You represented yourself so well, kneeling at my feet. [00:29:31]You were an aristocrat in that moment. [00:29:37]Have you ever seen a hypnotist at the theatre? [00:29:42]They say a person takes the broom... [00:29:46]and the person grabs the throat. [00:29:50]And the person grabs. [00:29:54]They say sweep. [00:29:57]And the person sweeps. [00:30:00]But the person has to be deeply asleep. [00:30:03]I'm already asleep. [00:30:07]Everything is enveloped in a cloud of smoke. [00:30:12]Your eyes shining like two coals after the fire goes out. [00:30:16]And your figure a large indefinite smudge with ash. [00:30:24]It's so hot here, so good. [00:30:29]So much light and such great peace. [00:30:32]And I have the broom. [00:30:36]Let me help while there is light and... [00:30:41]Thank you. [00:30:45]Now I will rest. [00:30:49]But tell me... [00:30:55]It's horrible. [00:30:58]But there's no other way out. [00:31:02]Go. [00:32:15]Transcription and Subtitles by the Amara.org community.
