Story

After being betrayed by her boyfriend Sam, fashion designer Allison Jones places an ad seeking a roommate to share her rent-controlled apartment in Manhattan. Among the applicants, attractive and seemingly normal Hedra Carlson stands out. Allison welcomes Hedra as her new roommate despite the warnings from her friends about the strangeness of other applicants. Initially, their living arrangement goes smoothly until Hedra begins to exhibit peculiar behavior such as sleepingwalking and displaying an unhealthy obsession with Allison's former boyfriend Sam.

As time passes, Hedra becomes increasingly controlling, going through Allison's mail, tampering with her belongings, and even attempting to sabotage her career. Allison grows concerned but brushes off the incidents until she discovers Hedra has been stalking Sam and has replaced Allison's pet puppy with an identical one without her knowledge.

Things escalate when Allison finds a photograph of Hedra as a child holding a dead puppy, suggesting psychological problems. She decides to evict Hedra but is shocked to find that Hedra has transformed their apartment into an exact replica of Allison's childhood home, complete with furniture and decorations down to the smallest details.

In a climactic confrontation on the stairway leading to their apartment, Allison finally realizes the extent of Hedra's obsession and manages to escape. She seeks refuge at a friend's place but returns home after learning that Hedra has been released from the psychiatric hospital where she was committed following their altercation.
