Story
Seth Warner, grief-stricken after his wife's death two years ago and a series of personal misfortunes, vents his anger at God during a thunderstorm on the rooftop of his New York City apartment building. In response, lightning strikes and kills Seth's dog. Despairing and furious, Seth decides to defy the biblical Ten Commandments as an act of rebellion against his perceived betrayal by God. He moves in with his sister-in-law Rachel while her husband Harry, a shifty reporter, sees potential career opportunities in Seth's actions. Seth systematically breaks each commandment, with Harry initially assisting him but eventually clashing with Seth over his methods and intentions. Meanwhile, Seth and Rachel develop romantic feelings for each other despite Rachel's failing marriage to Harry. As Seth approaches the final commandment, 'Thou shall not kill,' he, Harry, and Rachel find themselves confronting a raging hurricane at Montauk Lighthouse. Each character must face their own demons and life choices amidst this natural disaster, ultimately leading to surprising resolutions for all involved.
Summary
Directed by Daniel Taplitz in 1997, 'Commandments' is an unconventional blend of comedy, drama, romance, and redemption centered around Seth Warner's crisis of faith following his wife's death. The film explores themes of grief, anger, betrayal, and rebellion against authority figures as Seth defies the Ten Commandments one by one. Set predominantly in New York City, with key scenes taking place during a thunderstorm and culminating at Montauk Lighthouse amidst a hurricane, the movie uses natural elements to reflect the inner turmoil of its characters. The narrative also examines the complexities of relationships – particularly between siblings-in-law Seth and Rachel, as well as the evolving dynamic between Seth and Harry, Rachel's husband.
