Story

Maggie, after moving into her own place in Vancouver, meets and falls in love with Kim, a fellow lesbian. They soon move in together. However, Maggie's recently divorced mother, Lila, moves to Vancouver along with Maggie's younger brother, becoming unsolicited roommates just as the relationship between Maggie and Kim begins. Lila is initially unaware of Maggie's sexual orientation and Maggie isn't open about it. Meanwhile, Lila befriends Judy, a transsexual who is about to undergo a sex-change operation. As Lila becomes more integrated into Vancouver's LGBTQ+ community through her friendship with Judy, she learns the truth about Maggie and Kim, leading to complications.

Summary

Better Than Chocolate is a 1999 Canadian romantic comedy-drama directed by Anne Wheeler. The film centers around Maggie, played by Christina Cox, who embarks on a passionate relationship with Kim (Keli Anderson) while trying to navigate her newly independent life in Vancouver. The narrative becomes complicated when Maggie's recently divorced mother, Lila (Wendy Crewson), moves into her apartment along with Maggie's younger brother, forcing Maggie to keep her sexual orientation hidden from them. Lila's friendship with Judy, a transsexual about to undergo gender reassignment surgery, exposes her to Vancouver's LGBTQ+ community and ultimately leads to her discovering Maggie's truth.
