Story
Madeleine, who runs a disco on the French-Swiss border and dreams of becoming a singer in Paris, is involved with Paul, a smuggler planning to emigrate to Canada. Mali, an Algerian woman living in France but working in Switzerland, desires a different life. Louis, a Swiss clockmaker, wants to leave his mistress Lucie for Mali. Meanwhile, Jean, a young Swiss watchmaker whose skills are obsolete, spends his time between his parents' farm and Lucie's restaurant-bar.
Summary
No Man's Land (1985) is a Swiss drama directed by Alain Tanner, set against the backdrop of border smuggling across France and Switzerland. The film explores themes of immigration, desire for change, and the struggle to adapt in an ever-changing world through its interconnected characters: Madeleine, Mali, Louis, Paul, and Jean. It captures the spirit of the late 1970s/early 1980s European socio-political climate while delving into universal human desires.
