Born on March 3, 1982, in Sydney, New South Wales, she was raised on the Bowraville Mission on her ancestral homelands in coastal northern New South Wales. She is of Aboriginal and Welsh descent, identifying as a Gumbaynggirr, Dunghutti, and Bundjalung woman. While she is professionally known as Sandy Greenwood, her background is deeply rooted in her heritage as the daughter of a Stolen Generation survivor.

Greenwood's academic foundation includes a First-Class Honours Degree in Theatre from the Queensland University of Technology (2002), and she further honed her craft at prestigious institutions such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Atlantic Theater Company in New York.

Her film career is highlighted by her role in the action thriller Killer Elite (2011), where she made history as the first Indigenous Australian actress to work alongside Robert De Niro. Other notable screen credits include the romantic comedy Little Black Dress and a series regular role as Tanya Moran in the ABC series The Messenger (2023).
