Story

Franz Xavier Stannebein, a young orphan boy at the turn of the 20th century, harbors an intense desire to fly. This dream propels him through his life, from his years in an orphanage to adulthood working as a merchant in Spain. Eventually, he invests all his resources into constructing his own airship, driven by his lifelong passion. Stannebein's creation attracts the attention of German industrialists who express interest in supporting his idea, but only if he agrees to build an airfield in Spain. However, when Stannebein witnesses the Nazis using this airfield during the Spanish Civil War, he feels betrayed and travels to Germany to protest. Unfortunately for him, his protest lands him in a Leipzig insane asylum following World War II. After the war, Stannebein's grandson leads a search for his grandfather, only to discover that the asylum where he was confined stands empty.

Summary

Das Luftschiff (1983), directed by Rainer Simon, is a poignant drama based on Fritz Rudolf Fries' novel 'Das Luft-Schiff. Biografische Nachlasse zu den Fantasien meines Grossvaters' (1974). The film follows Franz Xavier Stannebein's lifelong obsession with flight and his unintended involvement in the Spanish Civil War and World War II through his creation of an airship. Lutz Dammbeck's innovative non-camera animation adds a unique visual layer to this story about dreams, betrayal, and the consequences of one man's passion.
