Story

Berlinger follows the life of Lukas Berlinger, a scientist, adventurer, and industrialist born in 1914. His childhood friend Johannes Roeder, also born that year, becomes his lifelong companion. Lukas marries Marlit in the early 1930s. As a chemist deemed important to the war effort during World War II, Lukas avoids conscription but secretly helps persecuted people escape to Switzerland. However, this puts his wife's life at risk and ultimately costs her life. Lukas flees to South America and returns to Germany in 1968. There, he reunites with Roeder, now a wealthy senator and 'building tycoon.' Lukas also meets Maria, a teacher nearly thirty years his junior, who bears a striking resemblance to Marlit.
